Tilt is the spiral that follows one bad hole. This page is for the player who turns a triple into three more. How to spot it, what it costs, and how to play through it.
Tilt has three tells.
The word comes from poker. A player takes a bad beat and plays the next hand angry. Golf borrowed it because golf needed it.
- The swing gets fasterYou are trying to hit the ball back to par. It goes further right.
- The hero shot appearsOver the water. Through the gap. A shot you would never pick at level.
- The putt stops getting readYou walk up and hit it. Four feet by. Miss the one back.
The bad hole is not the cost.
A triple is three shots. That is the bill for the hole. The bill for tilt comes on the next three holes.
- The tee shot
- Driver, when the hole asked for less. Aimed at the flag, over the trouble.
- The lie
- Five wood out of rough that wanted a wedge. It goes forty yards.
- The putt
- The one you did not read. The one back you did not care about.
The reset is three moves.
- Walk slower
- To the next tee. Let the group go first. Tilt hates a slow walk.
- Say the number
- Out loud. Write it down. A written triple is a fact. A remembered one is a story.
- Club up, aim fat
- One more club than you want. Aim at the wide part of the hole. Take the boring par.
Tilt tells you the round is gone.
Do the math instead. On a day you shoot ninety, a triple is the difference between ninety and eighty seven.
Three holes of tilt afterward costs more than the triple did. The round was never gone. The next three holes are the round.
One bad hole. Then play golf.
